I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.—John 14:6
Take time this week to study, memorize, and meditate on this astonishing declaration of Jesus. (Following each phrase are some ideas for deeper study.)
I AM... Using a concordance, look up scriptures where Jesus gave us glimpses of His identity by saying “I AM” (e.g., John 10, “I am the door;” “I am the good shepherd;” or John 6, “I am the bread of life.”) Write down what you find.
Jesus is the way to the Father. No one comes to the Father except through Him. Read John 14 to understand the context of this powerful statement. As you read, write down questions that come to your mind. Then turn to Hebrews 9 and 10. Read these chapters in a reference Bible. Take time to look up the references and write down your observations.
Jesus is the truth bringing you to the Father. No one comes to the Father but through Him. Read John 1 in a reference Bible. Then read the references to help you grasp more fully the perfections of our Savior who is full of grace and truth, love and righteousness, mercy and light (Psalm 36:5-10).
John Piper writes:
John says, “I love [you] in truth, because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever” (2 John 1:2). Our love for each other is grounded in two things: 1) truth abides in you and me; and 2) truth will be with you and me forever.
This is unusual. I take it to mean that Christian truth is always more than convictions, which we hold in our minds and hearts; truth is Christ himself—Truth with a capital T—who is not a conviction in our minds, but a real person with us forever in the community of love. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
Jesus is the life—abundant life, eternal life, the fountain of life in and with the Father. No one comes to the Father but through him. Read John 5. Look up the verses referenced. They can give you a better understanding of Jesus’ statement. Write down the praises and heartfelt thanksgivings that well up in your heart.
Look to Jesus. He is the way, and the truth, and the life. Come to the Father through him. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
